The Des Plaines River Trail parallels its namesake river through Lake County. As you travel through this river valley, look for changes in the landscape. Open areas such as prairies and savannas are common. In the southern section, the valley is narrow and the river runs a straighter course. Woods are common. In the northern section, the valley is wide and the river meanders. The trail is well maintained. There are plans to complete the 3.0 mile gap between the two sections and extend the trail to the Cook County line.Setting: Wooded, Open Spaces, Prairie
